Frequently Asked Questions

These FAQs apply to USA Gymnastics Xcel and DP unless otherwise noted.

What is the Difference between DP and Xcel?

Both are competitive programs run by USA Gymnastics. Both offer progressive levels of competition, and require mobility scores to move to the upper levels.

The biggest differences are:

  • DP has 10 levels (1 through 10), while Xcel has 5 levels (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond).

  • For the lower levels (1 to 5) gymnasts must perform precise routines, meaning all gymnasts of a level perform exactly the same routine.

  • In Xcel, gymnasts perform custom choreographed routines that meet the requirements of the level, so each gymnast's routine may be different.

Falls & Deductions

What is the deduction for a fall?

Each fall (on, off or against an apparatus) incurs a 0.50 deduction.

What is the deduction for hitting the apparatus or mat?

The deduction for hitting a mat with your feet depends on how hard you hit and whether you use it for support:

  • Touch or brush foot/feet on mat (0.05 - 0.10)

  • Hit foot/feet on apparatus (0.20)

  • Hit foot/feet on mat (0.30)

  • Full weight of foot/feet on mat (0.50)

Vault

Do they average the two vaults together?

No, they do not. The best score of the two vaults (if the gymnast does two vaults) is counted. They gymnast does not have to do two vaults. Their coach may request the score of the first vault before deciding to do a second vault. The gymnast has a limited number of attempts to do two vaults.

Attire

Is nail polish a deduction?

No, nail polish is NOT a deduction in DP and Xcel.

I know what you’re thinking - you’ve heard nail polish is a deduction and your gymnast absolutely can not wear it. But really, it isn’t a deduction to wear nail polish!

So that means I can wear nail polish?

No, it doesn’t. Why? Your gym may have a rule about it. Even if it’s not a deduction your gym may prohibit nail polish, so check with your gym before wearing nail polish to a meet.

Can gymnasts wear shorts?

Yes, they can! Shorts must be black with no embellishments/decorations (like sequins or gems) besides a small manufacturer logo (like GK).
